Vintage Bread Board

Remember bread boards??

Today they’re called charcuterie boards.

Also known as cheese boards…

cutting boards…

serving boards…

and platters.

Back in the day,

bread boards were rectangular boards

that you pulled out of a slot at the top of your cabinet

just above the silverware drawer.

This is the one in our kitchen that we’re about to demo. (HERE’S a look back at some of our completed renovations)

It’s the bread board that my mom used

for 50 years.

Every cut mark is a record of spuds sliced for Christmas Eve scalloped potatoes,

apples cut up for her famous apple crisp,

and PB & J prepared for school lunches.

All that history.

All that baking.

All that love.

All wrapped up in a 16 by 20 inch slab of wood.

How could I not keep this?

But what am I going to do with it??

Well, I’m going to upcycle it, of course!

So I started by drawing a pattern.

I just free handed it. I didn’t worry about making it symmetrical or perfect. I wanted it to look like an antique cutting board.

I traced the pattern onto the board

Then I cut it out

I used a jigsaw to cut along my lines, not worrying too much about making it perfect.

Then I smoothed out the edges with a file

Vintage bread boards are very warn so I wanted all my edges to be smooth and worn looking.

Next I gave the edges a good sanding.

I also lightly sanded the top.

Then I applied a natural stain

The stain is made from vinegar and steel wool and it darkens the wood in about 10 minutes. You can read all about how to make it HERE.
